The Brighton Marathon Weekend is delighted to announce ST JOHN’S SCHOOL AND COLLEGE and ST CATHERINE’S HOSPICE as the 2019 Brighton Marathon local charity partners. The Brighton Marathon, taking place on Sunday 14th of April 2019, benefits hundreds of charities each year, helping raise awareness and millions of pounds for fantastic causes.
Event Director, Tom Naylor says: “We are really pleased to welcome our local charity partners to the 2019 Brighton Marathon. The Brighton Marathon Weekend is a community event; it’s about bringing people together and provides a great opportunity to bring the incredible work of our charities to the forefront, particularly within the local area”.
St Catherine’s Hospice
St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity with a big ambition: to help everyone face death supported, informed and pain free.
For nearly 40 years, St Catherine’s has offered terminally ill people and their family and friends in Sussex and East Surrey expert end of life care and support. This is provided at their hospice and in people’s own homes.
The hospice also undertakes research, and trains and works alongside other healthcare professionals. This makes sure more local people benefit from the best possible care as end of life approaches.
Last year, the charity’s expert teams of nurses, therapists, healthcare assistants, doctors and counsellors cared for around 2,000 people.
Claire Irving, Director of Income Generation and Marketing at St Catherine’s says: “We’re thrilled to be working with the Brighton Marathon as a local charity partner. As a charity, we rely on the support of our community to help us be there for people when it’s needed most. Currently, we can only help one in three people who need our expert care, but thanks to partnerships like the Brighton Marathon we can help more people when life comes full circle. Without these vital partnerships, life would be much more challenging for terminally ill people and their family and friends.”
St. John’s School and College
St. John’s School and College St. John’s School and College is a residential & day special school and specialist college, based in Seaford and Brighton.
They are also a registered children and special needs charity that raises funds for the various projects and initiatives accessed by the people they care for and others in the local area.
They currently have over 118 learners with autistic spectrum conditions, Downs Syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome, rare diagnoses and severe communication difficulties.
Their many personalised programmes cater for young people whose learning needs are often too complex for mainstream educational settings to support. They offer these young people the chance to gain independence, become part of their local community and develop the skills and opportunities necessary to lead happy, fulfilled lives.
St. John’s has a number of exciting development projects, that directly reflect the needs of the young people that they support. These projects are based around:
• Developing independence and life skills through their 11 residential care houses.
• Preparing their learners for long term employment through work-based enterprises and vocational skills. These develop a number of practical skills – from Flourish, which teaches about gardening & horticulture, to Scrummies, their Brighton-based café that develops catering & hospitality skills.
CEO Simon Charleton says: ‘St. John’s is very excited to be chosen as local charity partners for the Brighton Marathon 2019, made even more special as this is the 10th year the event has run. We hope to raise lots of money for a new development project – Building Futures – that will provide specialist teaching, research and accommodation for young people with highly complex needs.’
The Brighton Marathon Weekend will take place 12-14 April 2019.
The event comprises The Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Mini Mile Races on Saturday 13th April, the BM10k and the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 14th April and the Event Village across all three days.
